Rancho Del Sol Golf Club opens
for play in Moreno Valley

A new golf course just opened for play in Southern California.

While it may have a familiar look, the recently unveiled Rancho Del Sol Golf Club in Moreno Valley is off to a fresh start.

Originally named Moreno Valley Ranch Golf Club, the new track opened on August 26 after being closed for five years. Back then, the Pete Dye-designed project featured three nines, but the new layout offers golfers a completely refurbished 18 holes.

A par 71 that is 6,553 yards from the back tees, Rancho Del Sol underwent a major renovation during the closure. The greens, greenside bunkers and turf have all been redone, and the par-3 18th hole is completely new, making the course look and play much differently from the past.

Located in East Inland Empire, the golf course is surrounded by wildlife and natural vegetation as well as scenic hills that are studded with granite boulders. Another defining characteristic is the contrast of the front and back nines.
“The nines are totally different,” said Mark Stevens, CEO of CSC Golf Management, which is operating the course for Bridge Investment Group, the company that purchased the property after it closed five years ago. “The front 9 is a wide-open bombers course and the back 9 is a tighter, mountain course with picturesque views.”

Some of the more dramatic views can be experienced on the par-3 16th hole, which features a fun shot from a tee complex offering scenic surroundings, and the challenging par-4 14th hole where golfers face a steep incline to the green. As the No. 2 handicap hole, the 14th also provides a stern test.

“This hole will challenge even the most experienced golfers,” Stevens said, adding that the golf course has received rave reviews since it reopened.

“We are humbled by the compliments,” Stevens said. “Diamond Golf did the remodel and maintains the course today, and they did a spectacular job of restoring a Pete Dye gem.”

A new clubhouse at Rancho Del Sol is expected to break ground in the first half of 2021, and there are also big plans in the works for the former Lake nine, which is being rebuilt into a new set of 18-hole courses for DiscGolf and FootGolf.

Former World Disc Golf Champion Avery Jenkins is designing the DiscGolf Course, while American FootGolf League President Roberto Balestrini is consulting and designing the FootGolf layout.

Still a way to go. All the greens were in good condition. The front nine was rough looking, but a good design overall. Loved the scenic back nine, and the possibilities of the various tee boxes available. But the steps on #11 were iffy. And the 18th was a nice hole, but like the people I played with, we prefer a longer hole to finish. I'll wait a while before returning. Also sad I could not get a meal before 10am because the cooks where not in yet. Drove up from Indio.
