'Do Your Part, Play Safe' campaign encourages responsible golf

With golfers of all stripes eager to get out there and tee it up these days, business has been brisk at local courses. This weekend is no different.
That's why we wanted to share some information from an article we came across in the Southern California PGA’s summer edition of the PROgram magazine highlighting its “Do Your Part, Play Safe” initiative in partnership with the SCGA, which  encourages responsible golf as the coronavirus persists. It’s an informative campaign that stresses the benefits of playing it safe on the course and urges golf facilities to share that message.
The article was accompanied by the video above, which was released back in early May, but remains relevant today. Check it out — and feel free to share it with your golf buddies.
Also, keep an eye out for signage at your course. It’s on display to help you follow best practices during these uncertain times.

Chris Zambri and
the SoCal university
agree to part ways

After 14 seasons leading the USC Trojan’s men’s golf team, head coach Chris Zambri and the university have mutually agreed to part ways. There were no specific reasons given for his departure.
During his tenure, Zambri led the Trojans to three Pac-12 titles, three NCAA regional crowns, and a runner-up finish at the NCAA championships in 2008. He also played for the USC golf team from 1989-1993.
"It was an honor to coach my alma mater,” Zambri said in a statement. “I was fortunate to work with so many great teams and players. I want to thank the players, staff, fans and donors who made my time coaching the Trojans so enjoyable. As I move on in my career, I will hold on to those memories and always will be rooting for the USC men's golf program."
It was reported that USC women’s golf coach Justin Silverstein will assist with the men’s program until a replacement for Zambri is found. CLICK HERE to read more.

California Amateur Championship
coming to Torrey Pines Golf Course

Keep your fingers and golf clubs crossed as the California Amateur Championship is set to take place July 27-August 1 at Torrey Pines Golf Course in La Jolla, with the dates subject to change due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. This is the 109th edition of the tournament, which has been won by golf greats such as Ken Venturi, Johnny Miller and Mark O’Meara. The grueling competition begins on Monday and Tuesday with 36 holes of stroke play on the North and South courses. The field is reduced to 32 players, who then compete in match play on the South course on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday until the final two players meet in the 36-hole finale on Saturday. The 2019 championship was won by star Pepperdine freshman William Mouw on the Dunes Course at Monterey Peninsula Country Club.

Juniors play for free after 3 at Monarch

Monarch Beach Golf Links in Dana Point has long been known for its junior-friendly environment. And with July being Family Golf Month, we wanted to help spread the word that junior golfers can play for free after 3 p.m. with a paid adult. The special offer is available for all Crown Club Cardholders and Monarch Beach Resort guests.
"For the local golfer or family of golfers, the Kids Play Free after 3 p.m. promotion is a great way to affordably enjoy some safe golfing time with your family at the Beach," said Monarch Beach Golf Links PGA General Manager Eric Lohman.

Play Sherwood CC and help save animals

You don’t get many opportunities to play at Sherwood Country Club unless you’re a member. But you can play the private club in Thousand Oaks, where both Greg Norman and Tiger Woods have hosted tournaments, and make a positive impact in the lives of animals in the Eastwood Ranch Foundation’s Charity Golf Invitational on September 14.
Run by Alison Eastwood, the daughter of actor/director Clint Eastwood, the foundation focuses on animal welfare and rescue. The tournament includes golf, lunch, awards and auction and is $4,800 per foursome and $1,200 per single.
As for the Jack Nicklaus Signature design Sherwood Country Club, it is da bomb, and you will be in awe the moment you pull up to the clubhouse. But don't take our word for it ... check out the video above and see for yourself.

El Dorado Park has been
challenging golfers since 1962

Located in a picturesque corner of Long Beach, El Dorado Park Golf Course was designed by the legendary Ted Robinson, Sr. and opened in 1962. Playing 6,921 yards, the par-72 layout is home to the prestigious Long Beach Open and is known for its serene surroundings and numerous trees along the fairways (more than 1,000 of them, in fact). Here’s a closer look:
Best holes: The opening hole is tough, but memorable. It measures just 357 yards from the blue tees, but the tee shot has to be perfect to leave a good second shot into the green. A small stream flows short of the putting surface so your approach shot must avoid it. Hole No. 8 is a slight dogleg left par 4, measuring 423 yards from the blue tees. In addition to a beautiful tree-lined fairway, the green is firm and fast with water left and behind.
A fun test: The layout plays longer thanks to kikuyu fairways and rough and features greens that are firm and slick. The golf course is fair and not overly difficult.
Did you know?: World Golf Hall of Famer and 1992 Masters champion Fred Couples played his first professional tournament at El Dorado in the 1980 Queen Mary Open, which is now the Long Beach Open.
